Expansion Project
The completion of construction for Mason District Hospital’s new acute care addition marks a key date in the history of our organization. The new addition provide contemporary physical facilities that are needed to provide high quality healthcare services to our communities. Work on the project began several years ago and involved months of planning. Our thanks to the many staff members who helped us to create the design that meets our patient’s needs and provides staff with a workflow more in tune with current nursing practices. The new addition includes a new lobby, a new gift shop and the new 12 room, 20 bed acute care nursing unit. The new unit includes eight rooms that can be easily converted from private to semi-private status, two special care rooms, and a room especially equipped for patients on respiratory isolation. Each of the rooms have their own private showers and bathroom facilities. In designing the unit, staff felt very strongly that each room have its own patient shower. For years, patients had to share a community shower. The new unit includes four rooms with wheelchair accessible showers, making it easier for the patient as well as the nursing staff as they assist patients who have difficulty standing. Staff also felt that it would be important for each of our rooms to have a Family Area equipped with a sleeper sofa or lounge chair where family members will be comfortable while they visit their loved one. The new unit also includes a coffee bar near the nurse’s station available for family members at any time day or night. Each room also includes a staff work station where patient supplies and scheduled medicines will be kept, saving time and steps for the staff as they care for the patient. Infrastructure — What you don’t see …

A new Nurse Call system has been installed and the unit has updated computer wiring to meet our ever growing technology needs. When will the New Unit Open? Although Mason District Hospital has scheduled numerous staff and public events this week to showcase our new addition, we will not begin utilizing the new addition for several weeks. The Illinois Department of Public Health is scheduled to conduct their final inspection of the addition next week. The expansion of our patient telemetry system and CPSI computer system to provide coverage in the new Nursing Unit is scheduled to take place during the last week of June.

Hospital Expansion Project
On a sunny afternoon on September 15, 2006, Mason District Hospital celebrated the groundbreaking for its hospital expansion project in almost the same spot where a similar celebration was held 50 years ago.

In 1957, when the original hospital was built, the facility incorporated the most modern concepts in patient services and infrastructure. Today, 50 years later, we must expand and update if we are to continue our tradition of superior patient care.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Harry Wolin, Administrator and CEO, identified three sources of funding for the project. The hospital has received a $285,000 grant from the State of Illinois, and a bond issue has generated another $5.7 million. That total will construct 12 new patient rooms, replace the heating, ventilation & cooling systems, and create a new main entrance, gift shop and lobby area.
We welcome your support and donations as we strive to provide our community with the state-of-the-art, quality healthcare services all of us have come to expect from Mason District Hospital.
